Snow-making

Can you imagine the mountains in winter without snow? And what needs to be done to conjure up snow on the ski runs?

Every year many visitors come to Gastein in winter and an estimated 80 per cent of those whizz across the slopes on their skis, carvers or snowboards. Gastein has a total of 890 acres of slopes and 42 lifts transport the wintersports enthousiasts up the mountains in comfort and safety, laying the slopes at their feet.

The latest in snow-making technology ensures that there is no lack of the snow needed. The lift operator, Gasteiner Bergbahnen, provides guaranteed snow on 96 of the total 201 km of runs and invests annually in the improvement of snow-making facilities. The tendency is rising.

Our snow-making facilities are based on a technical reproduction of a completely natural process: the creation of hoar frost. Water and air are mixed in a particular ratio, causing the water spray to crystallize to snow. So this really has nothing to do with chemistry!

Snow-making appliances in Gastein: 537 low-pressure cannons and lances.
