Sustainable energy in Skigastein: green electricity, solar power and PV

At Skigastein, we firmly believe in a “green” future. Through our unwavering commitment to clean energy and responsible resource management, we are actively paving the way towards a sustainable tomorrow. Join us as we offer you a glimpse behind the scenes of our eco-conscious efforts!

Skigastein relies entirely on green electricity – and therefore on clean energy

In line with our dedication to nature, we proudly rely on 100 percent green electricity within our ski and hiking area. When the Gastein cable cars and lifts safely transport mountain enthusiasts to the region’s breathtaking Alpine peaks, they do so powered by electricity sourced entirely from renewable energy sources. Our local energy providers, Salzburg AG and E-Werk Bad Hofgastein, supply us with this green electricity, bringing our cable cars, lifts, and infrastructure to life.

Initiatives for more energy efficiency in Skigastein

We prioritize energy efficiency through targeted load control for cable cars and snowmaking systems, ensuring that electricity is used effectively and conscientiously. Regular energy assessments help us implement energy-saving initiatives, including the replacement of heating systems and lighting fixtures, to further reduce our environmental impact.

Solar and photovoltaic systems in Skigastein: energy generation with foresight

In addition to the sun’s rays putting an amazing spotlight on the region’s picturesque landscape, we also harness the power of the sun by converting sunlight into electrical energy and heat for heating systems and hot water generation using state-of-the-art solar and photovoltaic systems.

In 2023, we reached an important milestone in our commitment to photovoltaic technology. Existing systems on the roofs of the Schlossalmbahn and Stubnerkogelbahn cable car stations have been reliably supplying sustainable energy. New installations, including those on the Weitmoser mountain station and the Hohe Scharte valley station, further contribute to our green energy mix. With the addition of the Solarpark Schlossalm, Skigastein will now generate up to 600 kilowatt peak (kWp) from photovoltaic systems by the end of 2023, marking an impressive 360 percent increase in output compared to the previous year!

A flourishing future: Solarpark Schlossalm pilot project

Starting from the 2023/2024 season, Skigastein will feature the innovative Solarpark Schlossalm, a project designed by the renowned architecture firm “Innerhofer oder Innerhofer”. This unique setup comprises 15 solar trees with a collective output of 100.8 kWp. What’s particularly noteworthy is that the installation of these futuristic trees with planted trunks on the Schlossalm parking lot does not require any additional surface sealing. The translucent panels, covering an area of 31 square meters per tree, serve a dual purpose by generating green energy and providing valuable shade for the parking spaces. It’s a perfect fusion of sustainability and aesthetics!
